3D Modeling and 3D Printing of crystals inside a basalt rock
Students and researchers from the geology department of the Institut Polytechnique LaSalle Beauvais (France) have determined a new methodology using all of the solutions offered by the 3DEXPERIENCE to bring new advances in science and education.
Using X-RAY tomographic pictures of a two millimeters large sample of synthetic magmatic rock, they generated a precise 3D model of the crystals inside the rock. The precision of this model was such that they were able to mathematically validate how crystals form. Never before could such model be as precise, as easy to analyze and as accessible for education.
The very same 3D data was used to generate a scale 100 3D printed model which now is used to develop a new hands-on lab session that will allow students to experience a magnified version of the crystal’s formation.
