PROJECT TIMELINE
The objective of this project is to design and optimize gears for a gearbox of an Internal Combustion (IC) engine. A spur gear pinion assembly was designed and analyzed in terms of mechanical strength. Abaqus FEA software is used to analyze the stress concentrations in the static design. Von misses criteria and contact stress is used to evaluate the stress on the tooth of both the gear as well as the pinion. Moment on pinion is determined by modelling tooth as a cantilever beam. Spur gear assembly is designed in such a way so as to reduce stress concentration. Natural frequency of vibration of the assembly is also determined. The results shows that the maximum bending stress occurs at the root of the tooth. Friction plays a huge factor in stress formation on tooth profile.
