Simulating Tensile Test in Abaqus

Students in Mechanical Engineering Materials class were asked to simulate the tensile testing procedure using abaqus. The animation demonstrates the stress distribution during the test and the necking phenomenon. The simulation stress-strain curve was exported from abaqus visualization and compared to the experimental stress-strain curve; the results are in close agreement. The purpose of this task was for students to learn how to make correlations between experimental and simulation results. They realized how performing simulations for material failure analysis saves lots of costs in industry.
